I’m launching a Patreon page today. I’ve been thinking about Patreon since I was in the hospital last month and I think this is the right direction for both myself and Modest Medusa. I’ve created a comic to explain what this is all about, but first I want to say that Modest Medusa will always be free to read. That won’t ever change. Here’s the comic:

Patreon comic

Okay, so what is Patreon? Patreon is a way for my readers, friends and fans to give me direct financial support by becoming a Patron. As a Patron you’ll choose an amount to give for every month of comics that I make. You’ll get billed at the end of the month, and I’ll get that money (minus a very small amount that goes to Patreon).

Do I have to contribute? Nope! Patreon is there for people who want to support my comic work and can afford to give a little money every month. It’s absolutely not mandatory and you shouldn’t feel like you have to give. I know that some of you like to support my work by buying my books. Some of you click on my ads, share my facebook posts and tweets, vote for Modest Medusa on Top Web Comics or recommend the comic to your friends. Patreon is another option for people looking for ways to support Modest Medusa.

Why do you need the money? I’m pretty poor. That’s not a secret. My recent medical problems and hospital stay have introduced new expenses to my life. I’m finding that I’m spending more time than I want to working to pay the bills and far less time than I’d like making comics. Patreon will help me pay some of my bills, giving me more free time to make more comics for you all to enjoy!

What is a “Month of comics”? I’m doing a monthly Patreon campaign, which means I’m asking for contributions for every month of comics I make. You all know that some months I make more comics than others. My goal is to be making at least 10 comics a month, with an average of 12-15.  These will mostly be Modest Medusa comics, but I’m hoping to also start posting Ghost Kiss comics every now and then, plus some other cool stuff! If I don’t produce at least 10 pages in a month my Patrons won’t be charged for that month!

What do we get out of it? The big benefit of this Patreon campaign is that I’ll be able to make more comics. That’s a benefit for everyone, whether you choose to give or not. I’ve also introduced several Milestone goals. If we reach certain amounts of monthly giving I can afford to do some cool stuff like get rid of the ads on this site, do a regular live drawing thing or even a monthly 24 hour comic.

I’m also offering some Rewards for people who want to give generous amounts each month. These aren’t extravagant gifts, but small things to let you know that I appreciate your support. I want to focus on making neat comics for everyone instead of providing exclusive content for just a few people. You can find out more about Milestone Goals and Rewards on my Patreon page.

Will there be special “Patron only” stuff? Not really. The Milestone goals are set up to provide new content for everyone. Some of the Rewards include stuff like wallpapers and stickers, but I’ll be posting that art for everyone to see. So don’t feel like you’ll be missing comics if you decide not to become a Patron.

How much should I give? Any amount of money is appreciated, really. Even 50 cents or a dollar a month will help out. You can pay by card or paypal. You can also cancel your monthly payments at any time if you need to.

I want to help out but I can’t afford to be a Patron! That’s okay. Patreon isn’t for everyone, and that’s fine. Please don’t contribute if you can’t afford to. Recommending Modest Medusa to a friend is a great way to show your support for free!

Will you still use Kickstarter? Yes I will! Kickstarter and Patreon are very different things. I’ll continue to use Kickstarter to raise money to print books and do other large projects.

Anything else? Patreon will be a part of this comic from now on. I’ll be talking about it from time to time and there will be a small ad on this site directing people to the Patreon page. Please feel free to ask questions and make suggestions!

Do you know what Patreon is?Here's a link. Take a sec to check it out. Okay?www.patreon.com/

Okay. So I'd like to use Patreon. I think it's idea for someone who does what I do, which is make web comics a few times a week. There's two models that I see other web comic people using. One is the "per month" model. That's where I ask for support for each month worth of comics that I make (and when I say "comics", I mean pages or strips. And I make about 10-12 of those a month right now). I like this because it means I'm providing one big lump of content every month, and asking people to contribute for that. 12 pages has value. 12 pages a month is a package that is attractive to a lot of people.

The other model that I see is "per comic" model. I'm asking people to give for each comic I post. A lot of people like this model, and a lot of people feel like they can contribute 50 cents or a dollar or whatever per comic.

Okay, so I'm trying to decide which is better for me and my readers. Of course, different people will have different preferences. The "Per Month" method is nice and easy, and presents an attractive package of work that I think a lot of people will be willing to support. Giving a little bit of money every month to support the production of 10, 12 or 15 comics is pretty reasonable, I think. On the other hand, most people are recommending a "Per Comic" approach. But... most of the people recommending this don't make comics (although they have used Patreon). I also worry that people will be less interested in giving 10 or 12 or 15 times a month then just giving once a month. Even if it ends up being the same amount of money.

Anyway... thoughts?

Out of nowhere, a new Modest Medusa Kickstarter! Starting today and continuing until early next Saturday the 10th I'm running a Kickstarter campaign for the new Modest Medusa coloring book! It's called Modest Medusa Learns to Color, and you can find out all about it on the Kickstarter page. This is a short Kickstarter. It's only 5 days! The idea is to quickly collect money for the project so it can be printer and shipped before the end of this month.

Why the hell do you want a coloring book? Dude, why wouldn't you? The 32 page book contains 25 new illustrations of characters like Urano, the Chainsaw Unicorn, the Mermaids, Marah and Medusa (of course)! Plus a brand new 3 page comic and some bonus activity pages! It's a cool book for both Modest Medusa fans and people who like to color. I'm also offering a cheaper digital copy of the book in case you're curious and want to check it out, but don't care about owning a paper copy.

So, PAX/Kumoricon were pretty great! What an insane weekend! Matt Schlotte and I drove up to Seattle early Saturday morning and spent most of the day talking to game developers, exploring and checking out all kinds of cool games. We were there to speak at the "Let's talk about sex" sex in gaming and game design panel, and that went pretty well. We spent a lot of time talking with people from teh audience after the panel.

We drove home on Saturday night (Sunday morning, really) so I could make it to Kumoricon the next day. Benjamin Hsu had already been running the Modest Medusa/Dubious Company booth on Saturday. We kept busy for the rest of the weekend, running games of G x B and Tulip Academy on request and hosting a pretty crowded panel. It was great to see a lot of friends that I only ever get to see at cons, and I was totally surprised by how much enthusiasm there was for our comics and games. I really can't wait to get back to Kumoricon next year and do more games, a bigger panel and just spend more time hanging out with people!

Thanks for the great weekend!

Here's the big news I've been waiting all week to spill. The first ever Modest Medusa paperback collection is on the way! Modest Medusa Season 1 contains the first 100 strips from the series, including colored versions of the first 15 strips! The book also contains a bunch of bonus material, including a new 10 page story, an illustrated interview with myself, Marah and the rest of the cast and a photo gallery recreating some of our favorite scenes from the comic, with a  special guest star playing the Medusa!

To finance this project I'm doing a Kickstarter. For those of you who don't know, Kickstarter. com is a site where artists can post projects and seek funding.  Each backer is given a reward based on how much they contributed.  Rewards include stuff like signed and sketched copies of the finished book, walk on appearnaces in Season 2, Chocodiles and hand crafted Modest Medusa hats! You can see the full list of rewards here at the Modest Medusa Kickstarter page!

You guys have been really supportive this last year, and I'd like to call on that support again. Printing a  book isn't cheap. I need about $2100 to do the initial print run, and if we can raise more than that… well, that's even better. The great thing about Kickstarter is that you can help fund this project and also get something out of it (besides the warm feeling of knowing that you supported Modest Medusa)! Contributing $22 will get you a copy of the book, signed by myself and Marah. I'll also do a sketch on the title page. By contributing that $22 you're financing the cost of printing 3-4 books! Now of course you can wait till after the book is printed and buy it then. Hopefully we'll raise enough money without you (and that isn't meant as a guilt trip). But buying now, pre-ordering through this Kickstarter, will really, really help me out. The Kickstarter lasts until September 16th, but don't wait till the last minute to contribute. Typically, the more people who contribute early, the better a Kickstarter does!

The Kickstarter is live now, so you can go on over and contribute. For those of you who want to know more about how Kickstarter works you'll want to read the FAQ on the Kickstarter page. I'd also appreciate it if you'd pass the news along via twitter, facebook, digg, google + and whatnot. Thanks!

Oh, special incentive! While our goal is to raise $2100 to print the book,  more money is certainly better (and means more books).  for every $400 over the goal we go I'll do a special 3 page strip featuring the Mermaids, Charles, the Chainsaw Unicorn or one of the other supporting characters. I think it would be really awesome if the book had an extra 6, 9 or 12 pages of bonus stories!

Thanks guys. I really appreciate your support. please let me know if you have any questions! Check out the Modest Medusa kickstarter here: www.kickstarter.com/projects/2…
